Microsoft Authenticator: The Future of Password-Free Security

Microsoft has announced changes to its Authenticator app, which will affect how users store and autofill passwords. Starting in July, the app will no longer support autofilling saved passwords, prompting users to switch to Microsoft Edge or another password management solution.

Microsoft is also set to remove saved payment information from Authenticator in July and delete passwords in August. These changes come as part of Microsoft’s efforts to streamline password autofill features within Edge.

To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft will automatically sync saved passwords to user accounts for easy access in Edge. Users can switch to Edge as their default autofill provider by adjusting settings on their devices. Alternatively, users can export their passwords to another service before the August deadline if they prefer not to use Edge.

Microsoft Authenticator initially launched in 2016 as a multifactor authentication tool and introduced password storage capabilities in 2020. Despite discontinuing password support, Authenticator will continue to offer passkeys, enabling users to sign in using their device’s authentication methods like a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

For more details on exporting passwords or setting Edge as the default autofill provider, users can visit Microsoft’s official website.
