Activision has recently removed one of its Call of Duty games from the Microsoft Store and PC version of Game Pass due to reports of multiple PC players having their computers compromised by hackers after playing the game. The 2017 shooter Call of Duty: WWII was taken offline for investigation, affecting only PC versions from Microsoft’s storefront and Game Pass, while the game remains accessible through Steam on PC and other platforms.

Activision did not specify the reason for the game being removed, but social media is flooded with accounts of players experiencing hacks on their PCs after playing. A streamer named Wrioh shared a clip showing the hack in progress, with the game freezing, command line and text box windows appearing, and the desktop wallpaper changing. The text box indicated that Wrioh had been “RCEd,” hinting at remote code execution vulnerabilities exploited by hackers to install malware and take control of devices.

Call of Duty: WWII was introduced to Game Pass and the Microsoft Store in June, potentially leading to the issue at hand. According to TechCrunch, different versions of the game were added to Microsoft’s platforms, including one with an old flaw that had been fixed in other versions. As of now, the game has not been reinstated.
