GlobalFoundries, a prominent semiconductor manufacturer, has recently made headlines with its acquisition of MIPS, a leading supplier of AI and processor IP. This strategic move aims to enhance GF’s capabilities in AI and compute technologies, particularly in the areas of autonomous mobility, industrial automation, data centers, and intelligent edge.

GlobalFoundries has acquired MIPS to strengthen its position in AI and processor IP, expanding its portfolio with advanced RISC-V processor IP and software tools for various applications.

MIPS recently introduced the Atlas portfolio, featuring cutting-edge compute cores for real-time and AI edge processing, along with Atlas Explorer, a virtual platform designed for optimization in product design.

This acquisition enables GlobalFoundries to leverage MIPS’ expertise in delivering efficient and scalable compute IP, aligning strategically with the evolving demands of AI platforms across diverse markets. The goal is to provide customers with more flexible solutions that enhance efficiency and performance across various industries.

Niels Anderskouv, President, and COO of GlobalFoundries, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, emphasizing the potential for pushing the boundaries of efficiency and performance across automotive, industrial, and data center infrastructure applications. The integration of MIPS’ capabilities with GF’s differentiated process technologies aims to deliver best-in-class products to customers.

Post-acquisition, MIPS will continue to operate as a standalone business within GlobalFoundries, maintaining its focus on autonomous platforms and physical AI. The completion of the acquisition is anticipated in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
