The UK government is rumored to be stepping back from its dispute with Apple over gaining access to encrypted user data stored on iCloud. Instead of achieving victory through legal means or a shift in privacy policies, the decision seems to be influenced by pressure from the US during trade negotiations.

Multiple undisclosed sources within the UK government have disclosed to the Financial Times that a resolution is in the works. One official mentioned that the Home Office will likely retreat from its stance, with vice-president JD Vance expressing strong opposition to the UK’s request. This demand could potentially breach the Cloud Act agreement between the two nations, a line the US is unwilling to cross.

Another source reiterated this sentiment, emphasizing the UK’s reluctance to push for anything that could be interpreted as a violation of free speech rights by US officials. A third insider acknowledged the UK’s predicament, admitting that the Home Office is now seeking a solution to the impasse they find themselves in.
