A Call to Protect Your Most Valuable Asset — Data

Data loss is a nightmare that many have experienced or heard of, with the potential to devastate individuals and businesses alike. Whether it’s personal files, cherished memories, or critical business information, the repercussions of lost data can be severe in terms of time, money, and irreplaceable content. On World Backup Day, the alarm is being sounded to emphasize the importance of safeguarding the most valuable asset: data.

In today’s digital age, data is the lifeblood of businesses, and secure data storage is essential for their operations. Richard Copeland, CEO of Leaseweb USA, warns that skipping backups is akin to setting a ticking time bomb, as a single mishap or cyber-attack can lead to data loss and significant consequences. Without a backup, there is no safety net, only downtime, financial loss, and regret.

Moreover, with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), data has become even more crucial as it fuels AI technologies. Jim Liddle, chief innovation officer at Nasuni, emphasizes the significance of enterprise data as organizations navigate the vast volumes of data generated daily. Deletion is not the solution; instead, smarter data backup strategies must be implemented to preserve valuable data.

Deleting data can have unintended repercussions, including regulatory fines and compromised outputs due to missing context. Liddle stresses the importance of a flexible infrastructure to facilitate efficient data backup and maintenance without resorting to data deletion.

The threat of cybercriminals leveraging AI to enhance their attacks is a growing concern, with ransomware incidents on the rise. Cynthia Overby, director of Strategic Security Solutions at Rocket Software, highlights the escalating costs of ransom payments and recovery, underscoring the need for robust data protection measures.

To ensure data resilience, organizations must go beyond mere backups and adopt agile recovery strategies that cater to hybrid infrastructures. Operational efficiency demands real-time data replication and seamless synchronization across multiple platforms, ensuring uninterrupted business continuity.

Modern data storage and preservation strategies are vital for optimizing data efficiency while minimizing costs. Smart archiving and retention of valuable data for AI training and insights are recommended practices to enhance competitive advantage.

Bob Fine, Quantum’s senior analyst relations manager for the LTO Program, stresses the importance of maintaining at least two copies of data, one offline and the other offsite, to create an airgap between backups and potential cyber threats. Following the 3-2-1 rule – three copies of data in two different locations, with one offsite or in the cloud – is advocated as a robust backup strategy.

On World Backup Day, the message is clear: data protection is not just a best practice but a critical necessity in today’s data-driven world. By implementing proactive backup measures and adhering to best practices, individuals and businesses can safeguard their most valuable asset and mitigate the risks associated with data loss. When it comes to backing up your data, don’t make the mistake of assuming that your backups are foolproof. It’s crucial to test your backups regularly to ensure that they are working properly. After all, the last thing you want is to discover that your safety net has holes when you’re already in freefall.

According to experts, skimping on backups might seem like a cost-saving measure at first, but the consequences can be severe when a disaster strikes. The cost of not having a reliable backup system in place can be tenfold compared to investing in a solid backup and disaster recovery strategy.

By regularly testing your backups and ensuring that they are functioning as intended, you can have peace of mind knowing that your data is safe and secure. Don’t wait until it’s too late to find out that your backups are not up to par. Take proactive measures to protect your valuable information and avoid any unnecessary headaches in the future.
