The initiative represents a significant step towards preparing the workforce for the AI-driven economy and ensuring that individuals can harness the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Liz Kendall, emphasized the importance of empowering individuals to work effectively with AI while safeguarding them from potential risks.
The UK aims to become the fastest adopter of AI in the G7, with the potential to generate £140 billion in economic value annually. However, current research indicates that only 21% of UK workers feel confident using AI at work, highlighting the need for widespread upskilling. Smaller businesses, in particular, lag behind in AI adoption, with microbusinesses being significantly less likely to integrate AI tools into their operations.
To address this gap, the government has launched a series of short, free AI training courses on the AI Skills Hub. These courses, developed by leading technology firms, are designed to enhance practical AI skills and are aligned with national standards. Learners can access the courses online and gain hands-on experience in using AI tools for various tasks, such as content creation and data analysis.
The initiative extends to both public and private sectors, with a focus on reaching 10 million workers, including employees from small and medium-sized enterprises. Industry partners, including major corporations and government departments, have joined forces to support the programme and deliver free AI training on a national scale. Additionally, a new AI and the Future of Work Unit has been established to monitor the impact of AI on jobs and productivity and ensure that policies adapt to technological advancements.
The government has allocated additional funding to support the initiative, including investments in tech jobs, traineeships, and scholarships for AI and STEM students. The goal is to ensure that no worker or business is left behind in the transition to an AI-driven economy, positioning free AI training as a key component of the UK’s industrial strategy.
