Akamai has recently acquired Fermyon, a vendor specializing in serverless WebAssembly function-as-a-service (FaaS). This strategic move aims to bolster Akamai’s edge computing capabilities, offering innovative solutions for companies seeking cost-effective alternatives to cloud-native applications.
Akamai has announced the acquisition of Fermyon, a provider of serverless WebAssembly (Wasm) function-as-a-service (FaaS) solutions.
This acquisition is strategically designed to enhance Akamai’s edge computing offerings, enabling businesses to develop edge-native applications that offer more economical options compared to cloud-native applications.
Fermyon’s advanced technology will be seamlessly integrated into Akamai’s platform, simplifying the deployment of AI and other capabilities at the edge.
Adam Karon, the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of Cloud Technology Group at Akamai Technologies, commented, “Fermyon’s FaaS capabilities, in conjunction with Akamai’s cloud, will streamline the process for developers to innovate and execute lightweight code at the edge. By expanding compute capabilities from core data centers to the edge of the internet, developers will have a wide range of cloud-native and serverless options to create and deploy their next-generation applications.”
Known for its leadership in serverless functions and WebAssembly, Fermyon maintains open-source projects like Spin and SpinKube, which Akamai plans to support moving forward. The employees of Fermyon, including its co-founders, will join Akamai’s Cloud Technology Group to drive advancements in serverless technologies.
This acquisition will enhance the integration of Akamai’s edge functions platform with its performance and security offerings, further strengthening the company’s position in the market. Akamai anticipates no significant financial impact from the acquisition in 2025.
This move aligns with Akamai’s commitment to expanding its cloud computing services and supporting developers in creating secure, high-performance applications at the edge. Recently, Akamai extended its AI inference capabilities to the edge through collaboration with NVIDIA infrastructure.
