The Seattle-based game developer One More Game has released its first game after securing a $22 million funding round in 2022 from investors like Lightspeed and Andreessen Horowitz. The company made the bold decision to scrap its previous project, Spellcraft, a hybrid real-time strategy fantasy game that had been in development for over three years. Co-founder Jamie Stormbreaker mentioned that the shift was influenced by a change in player preferences towards games that can be played with friends, like Among Us and Lethal Company, as opposed to competitive games with strangers.
After abandoning Spellcraft, One More Game introduced SWAPMEAT, a quirky third-person squad-based cooperative shooter inspired by 2000s Adult Swim shows. This new game marks a significant departure from their previous project, not only in terms of genre and gameplay but also in the business model, opting for an upfront purchase instead of free-to-play. According to Stormbreaker, the goal was to provide players with long-lasting value and respect their time by creating a game that would be a permanent fixture in their Steam library.
SWAPMEAT introduces a unique game mechanic called “meat mixing,” where players scavenge body parts from defeated enemies and attach them to their own bodies to acquire different abilities and skills. The game garnered attention at the recent PAX West gaming convention, where Stormbreaker and his team showcased their creation to enthusiastic players. The positive reception at events like PAX West, PAX East, and Gamescom has fueled the team’s excitement as they prepare to launch SWAPMEAT on Steam Early Access.
With a combined wealth of experience in the gaming industry, co-founders Stormbreaker and Patrick Wyatt bring a rich background to One More Game. Their journey from meeting at a gaming convention nearly two decades ago to returning as studio founders, showcasing their own game, highlights the evolution and growth of the gaming industry. SWAPMEAT represents not just a new game for the studio but a testament to their dedication to creating innovative and engaging gaming experiences for players.
