    Unique Article:

Amazon Proposes New Data Centre in Hemel Hempstead

Amazon has recently submitted plans for a new data centre development in Hemel Hempstead, signaling its intent to expand its digital infrastructure beyond London. The proposed facility will consist of a purpose-built data centre building, roof-level plant, emergency generator compound, security building, and internal access roads. With an estimated footprint of 20,840 sqft, or 1,935 sqm, the data centre is set to be a significant addition to Amazon’s UK operations.

What sets this proposal apart is Amazon’s focus on using tape media for long-term data storage, as opposed to the more power-hungry AI-ready data centres that are prevalent in the industry. By opting for tape storage, Amazon aims to reduce its reliance on local utilities, addressing concerns about electricity demand and environmental impact. The company plans to implement a chilled-water cooling system that relies on free-cooling for most of the year, along with backup generators powered by HVO. Additionally, an 8.55kW solar system is planned for the site, although it may not fully power the entire facility.

In anticipation of potential community concerns, Amazon is taking proactive measures to minimize the data centre’s impact on the local area. The company’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its choice of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources. The planning application is currently under review by Dacorum Borough Council, with a decision expected later this year. Amazon is also awaiting a decision on its proposal for a data centre at the former Didcot A Power Station site in Oxfordshire, highlighting the company’s ongoing investment in UK data infrastructure.

As Amazon continues to expand its digital footprint, these new data centre developments represent a strategic step towards meeting the growing demand for secure and sustainable data storage solutions. With a focus on efficiency and environmental responsibility, Amazon is setting a precedent for the future of data centre operations in the UK.
