A proposal for a cutting-edge data center near the A127 in Wickford has received a positive recommendation from planning experts at Basildon Borough Council. This development would bring a substantial £1.3 billion investment to the borough, with £500 million allocated for construction and another half a billion pounds for state-of-the-art computer equipment.
The new data center project includes the creation of a 34.5-acre nature reserve adjacent to the site, expanding the Nevendon Wetlands area and protecting the green space between Basildon and Wickford. Additionally, the proposal involves significant financial contributions towards employment, training, and skills development, as well as a voluntary donation to an Education Fund.
The facility will utilize an innovative ‘closed loop’ cooling system, ensuring sustainable water usage by recirculating water instead of continuously drawing fresh supplies. This eco-friendly approach aligns with modern environmental standards and promotes efficient resource management.
The Economic Development Team at Basildon Borough Council has expressed support for the data center project, recognizing its potential to attract high-value businesses and foster skills development within the community. Similarly, the Essex Chamber of Commerce has endorsed the initiative, highlighting the positive impact of such a substantial investment on the local economy and business environment.
The final decision on the planning application is scheduled for Thursday, 25 September, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting the outcome. John Bourne from Caineal, the organization behind the proposal, emphasized the critical role of data centers in today’s interconnected world, underscoring the significance of strategic locations like Basildon for driving innovation and economic growth.
