The enigmatic film Bugonia, helmed by the eccentric director Yorgos Lanthimos, was bound to be a peculiar creation from the start. Known for his penchant for the bizarre, Lanthimos delivers a tale that pits Jesse Plemons’ character, a conspiracy theorist beekeeper, against a CEO who may or may not be an extraterrestrial from Andromeda.
The very title of the film, Bugonia, is derived from the Greek word “bougonia,” which stems from an ancient Mediterranean belief that bees could spontaneously generate from the corpses of deceased animals.
What sets Bugonia apart, however, is its unexpected ending, even for those familiar with the original South Korean film it is based on. As a devoted fan of the original work, I anticipated Lanthimos to take a different path, yet the conclusion of Bugonia closely mirrors that of Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet!, surprising viewers with its fidelity to the source material.
Warning: spoilers for Bugonia ahead.
In Bugonia, Emma Stone portrays Michelle Fuller, a pivotal character in the intricate plot. Fuller finds herself ensnared by Teddy, a delusional individual convinced of extraterrestrial presence on Earth. Alongside his cousin Don, Teddy subjects Fuller to bizarre rituals, including chemical castration, in a misguided attempt to establish contact with her supposed alien race.
Despite Fuller’s initial denial of being an alien, Teddy’s absurd indicators of her alien lineage eventually force her to play along. As the narrative unfolds, Fuller is coerced into admitting her extraterrestrial identity, leading to a series of increasingly deranged events.
Fuller’s defiance peaks when she confronts Teddy about his heinous actions, claiming to be an Andromedan royal responsible for humanity’s creation. The tension escalates as Fuller lures Teddy into a fatal encounter, exposing his twisted chamber of horrors filled with mutilated bodies of his perceived alien victims.
As the film hurtles towards its climax, Fuller orchestrates a daring escape plan, manipulating Teddy’s delusions to her advantage. The tension reaches a boiling point as Fuller guides Teddy towards a supposed teleportation device, promising a return to his mother’s side aboard a celestial mothership.
However, the anticipated rescue mission takes a catastrophic turn when Teddy’s explosive device detonates prematurely, propelling his severed head towards Fuller in a shocking twist of fate.
Bugonia’s unexpected conclusion leaves audiences reeling, a testament to Lanthimos’ mastery of suspense and surprise. As the dust settles on this enigmatic tale, viewers are left pondering the intricate web of deception and delusion woven throughout the film, a testament to the enduring allure of the unknown and the unfathomable.
