Summary:

  1. Data center outages are decreasing in frequency, but power-related issues remain a significant concern for operators.
  2. The Uptime Institute’s 2025 report highlights a decline in outages, with power failures being the primary cause of impactful incidents.
  3. Human error continues to be a prevalent issue in data center downtime, emphasizing the need for better training and processes.

    Article:
Data center outages are on the decline, according to the latest findings from the Uptime Institute. While the frequency of outages is decreasing, power-related issues persist as a major worry for data center operators. The 2025 report from the Uptime Institute points out that power failures remain the leading cause of impactful outages, with 54% of incidents attributed to power issues.

The study draws on various data sources, including global surveys, member information, and publicly reported incidents to provide a comprehensive analysis of data center outages. Key takeaways from the report indicate that 53% of operators reported experiencing an outage in the past three years, a notable decrease from previous years. Additionally, only 9% of reported incidents in 2024 were classified as serious or severe, marking a positive trend in outage severity.

Power-related failures continue to pose a significant challenge for data center operators, with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) failures being particularly troublesome. As data centers increasingly rely on power-hungry technologies like AI, the strain on power systems is expected to grow, potentially leading to more incidents in the future.

Human error also remains a prevalent issue in data center downtime, with staff failing to follow procedures accounting for a significant portion of outages. The Uptime Institute emphasizes the importance of better training, processes, and communication to address these preventable errors and reduce the likelihood of downtime incidents.

In conclusion, while the overall trend shows improvement in outage frequency, data center operators must remain vigilant in addressing power-related issues and human errors to ensure the continued reliability of their operations. By investing in better training and processes, operators can mitigate the risks associated with data center outages and enhance overall uptime.
