A lawsuit against Deel, an HR and payroll provider, was dismissed by a Florida judge. This lawsuit was not the one involving a corporate spy, as described by Deel. The CEO of Rippling, a rival company, clarified that they were not involved in this litigation.
Still, this is a positive development for Deel. In January, a lawsuit filed in Florida accused Deel of aiding Russian entities in bypassing U.S. sanctions by processing payments for Surge Capital Ventures.
Surge Capital Ventures faced a separate action by the U.S. SEC for allegedly being part of a Ponzi scheme that defrauded church members of $35 million. The lawsuit against Deel was filed by Melanie Damian, a court-appointed receiver for Surge, on behalf of investors, alleging that Deel facilitated the processing of these payments.
Deel is trying to connect this case to the one filed by Rippling, as both cases involve allegations under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
Rippling, in its lawsuit against Deel in California, also accuses Deel of violating RICO, the Defend Trade Secrets Act, and California state law. The allegations in Rippling’s lawsuit revolve around a Rippling employee admitting to being a paid corporate spy for Deel.

Deel hopes that the dismissal of one lawsuit alleging RICO violations will set a precedent for the other allegations made by Rippling in California. The company is also countersuing Rippling, claiming that a Rippling employee impersonated a customer unlawfully.
In a twist, the individual who confessed to being a corporate spy for Deel, Keith O’Brien, obtained a restraining order against individuals he believed were following him and threatening his family. O’Brien is now a key witness for Rippling in their case against Deel.
Initially denying involvement, Deel’s lawyers later admitted to conducting discreet surveillance on O’Brien. The ongoing legal battle involves accusations and counteraccusations between the two companies.
Both Deel and Rippling are gearing up for a legal showdown, with each side aiming to defend its position vigorously. The outcome of these cases remains uncertain as they navigate through the complexities of the legal system.
