Digital Realty, a well-known provider of carrier-neutral data center solutions, is venturing into a new project with the commencement of its first-ever facility in Rome. This move highlights the company’s dedication to offering PlatformDIGITAL® services in the Mediterranean region, bolstering its global network infrastructure.

Revolutionizing Data Connectivity in Rome

Digital Realty, a leading player in the data center industry, is making waves with the launch of its groundbreaking facility, ROM1, in Rome. This state-of-the-art data center is set to redefine connectivity standards in the region, boasting cutting-edge AI technologies and seamless global and regional network integration. By incorporating interconnection capabilities with multiple subsea cable systems, ROM1 is positioned as a pivotal gateway linking Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Strategic Location and Expansion Plans

Located just 15 kilometers from the coastline, ROM1 has a projected IT capacity exceeding 3MW. With future expansion prospects on its 22-hectare site, the facility is poised to emerge as one of Italy’s premier data center campuses. Alessandro Talotta, the Managing Director of Digital Realty in Italy, highlights the strategic significance of Rome as a gateway to the Mediterranean region, underscoring the company’s commitment to establishing a robust network of interconnected data centers across key growth markets.

Enhancing Connectivity Across the Mediterranean

In addition to its Rome facility, Digital Realty operates in key Mediterranean hubs like Athens and Marseille, with plans for further expansion, including a proposed interconnection hub in Barcelona. Rome’s strategic position as a vital European city strengthens its role as a conduit for regional and global connectivity, paving the way for improved efficiency and competitiveness in Italy’s digital landscape.

Sustainability and Environmental Focus

Emphasizing sustainability, ROM1 is designed to run entirely on renewable energy sources, aligning with Digital Realty’s environmental objectives and catering to the rising demand for eco-friendly data infrastructure. The project’s commitment to sustainability reflects a broader industry trend towards green initiatives and energy-efficient operations.

Future Prospects and Transformative Impact

The initial phase of ROM1 is slated for completion by 2027, signaling the start of a transformative journey towards establishing a thriving digital ecosystem in Rome. As Digital Realty continues to expand its presence in strategic locations, the company is set to reshape the data center landscape and drive innovation in connectivity solutions across Europe and beyond.
