Signal Enhances Privacy with Windows App Update

Signal has announced a new update to its Windows app that aims to enhance privacy by preventing the system from capturing screenshots. This new “screen security” setting is now enabled by default on Windows 11, protecting users’ content from Microsoft’s Recall feature, which captures screenshots continuously to remember activities.

While Microsoft faced backlash and paused the rollout of the Recall feature last year, it has since reintroduced it as an opt-in feature with the ability to pause at any time. However, Signal warns that sensitive content can still be captured, prompting the need for enhanced privacy measures.

When attempting to take a screenshot with the new screen security setting enabled, users will only see a blank screen. Signal also notes that certain functions, like screen readers, may be affected when the setting is enabled, but users can easily disable it through Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen security.

Signal emphasizes the importance of privacy and integrity in its services, urging AI teams to consider the implications of features like Recall more carefully. By implementing these privacy measures, Signal aims to maintain the trust of its users and protect their sensitive information.
