Microsoft is introducing Agent Mode in Excel, part of its new approach to “vibe working,” where Copilot can analyze data, generate visualizations, and iterate on results through multi-step tasks.
Embracing the concept of “vibe coding,” Microsoft is now ushering in a new era of “vibe working” within its suite of productivity apps. This innovative approach involves a collaborative effort between users and AI agents to enhance document creation and data analysis in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Gone are the days of static responses from AI tools. With the updated Copilot AI features, users can engage in dynamic conversations with AI agents to generate, test, and refine content in real-time. This interactive process allows for a more fluid and iterative approach to document creation and data analysis.
Microsoft recently unveiled two key enhancements to its productivity apps:
- Agent Mode in Word and Excel: This feature empowers Copilot to execute complex, multi-step tasks within the apps, such as updating reports in Word or creating visualizations in Excel. PowerPoint integration is also on the horizon.
- Office Agent in Copilot chat: A chat-based tool that assists users in crafting PowerPoint presentations and Word documents from simple prompts, refining the results through follow-up interactions.
Notably, Microsoft has tapped into AI models from Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI chatbot, to power the Office Agent in Copilot. This strategic move signifies Microsoft’s commitment to diversifying its AI capabilities beyond models from OpenAI.
As Microsoft races to enhance its AI offerings, the tech giant faces stiff competition from the likes of Google, Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others in the realm of generative AI for productivity and design applications. Despite the fierce competition, Microsoft’s commercial products and cloud services continue to thrive, with a notable 14% revenue growth in the 2025 fiscal year.
For users eager to explore these new features, Agent Mode is currently available in Word and Excel on the web for Microsoft 365 Copilot users, with support for Microsoft 365 Personal or Family users through the Frontier program. Desktop versions and PowerPoint integration are slated for future releases. Meanwhile, Office Agent is initially exclusive to Personal and Family users in the U.S., also accessible through the Frontier program.
