The age of our solar system is estimated to be around 4.6 billion years, yet numerous planetary systems are still in their formative stages. Identifying and examining these emerging systems can be a challenging task, but a team of international researchers has managed to capture some of the most detailed images ever seen of protoplanetary disks within over a dozen young star systems.
These groundbreaking discoveries come from the exoALMA project, a global initiative that utilizes the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to survey the cosmos. Instead of directly observing planets, astronomers used ALMA to detect the effects of potential planets on their surrounding environment.
“It’s like trying to spot a fish by looking for ripples in a pond, rather than trying to see the fish itself,” stated Christophe Pinte, a co-leader of the project at Monash University’s Institute of Astrophysics and Planetology in Australia.
Pinte and his team implemented new calibration techniques and enhanced analysis methods to achieve these results. They focused on aligning observations from different time points, filtering out unwanted distortions and noise in the data. By applying these techniques to extensive datasets collected by ALMA from 15 young star systems, they were able to pinpoint potential locations of protoplanetary activity.

This study provided a comprehensive examination of the 3D structures of multiple protoplanetary disks, ranging from a few hundred to about 1,000 light-years away from Earth. Astronomers identified these regions based on swirling gas affected by a young planet’s gravitational pull, as well as rings and gaps of dust within the disks. The survey highlighted the dynamic nature of protoplanetary disks, showcasing intricate interactions between cosmic dust and gas.
“The advanced techniques we have developed to collect and analyze this data are akin to upgrading from reading glasses to high-powered binoculars,” commented principal investigator Richard Teague. “They unveil a new level of detail in these systems where planets are taking shape.
