The Star Wars cinematic universe is making a triumphant return to Seattle with a special two-week celebration at SIFF Cinema Downtown in September. The marathon will showcase 11 titles, spanning from the original 1977 classic “A New Hope” to the standalone stories “Rogue One” and “Solo.”
During the first weekend, starting on Sept. 5, viewers can experience the films in chronological order, taking them on a journey “from Anakin’s podracing days to Rey’s final rise,” as described by SIFF on their website.
The second weekend will offer a unique viewing experience by showcasing the films in the order they were released, allowing fans to relive the original trilogy magic and shocking reveals as they unfolded over the decades.
Formerly known as the Cinerama, the theater was originally opened in 1963, just a year after Seattle hosted the World’s Fair. It underwent a major renovation in 1999, transforming into a high-tech movie destination after being purchased by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1988.
SIFF Cinema Downtown, previously known as the Cinerama, acquired the theater from the estate of Allen and reopened it in 2023 after a period of closure during the pandemic. The non-profit film and education organization has since revitalized the theater, continuing its legacy as a hub for cinematic experiences.
With tickets now on sale for “Star Wars: The Ultimate Cinematic Marathon,” fans can secure their seats for $22 per film ($19 for SIFF members; $21 for seniors and students; $17 for children).
