RWE Secures Eight-Year PPA with Global Switch for Renewable Electricity Supply
RWE has recently announced a significant milestone in their sustainability efforts by signing an eight-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Global Switch, a leading data centre operator. The agreement involves the supply of renewable electricity to Global Switch’s facility in London Docklands.
The PPA, set to run from January 2026 to 2033, will see RWE providing 70 GWh of renewable electricity annually to Global Switch. This electricity will be sourced from the Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in south-west Wales, which consists of 28 turbines with a total generation capacity of 57.4 MW and was commissioned in 2018.
Global Switch’s decision to partner with RWE comes at a crucial time as their Docklands campus undergoes expansion and densification. With a secured power capacity of 224 MVA (approximately 224 MW), the site is well-equipped to meet the increasing demand for AI and high-performance computing. Notably, recent deployments of NVIDIA H100 and H200 GPUs by CoreWeave, as well as Global Switch’s liquid cooling showcase in London, highlight the site’s commitment to cutting-edge technology.
Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply & Trading, emphasized the growing energy requirements of data centres in light of digitalization and AI adoption. He expressed RWE’s enthusiasm in partnering with Global Switch and providing them with low-carbon electricity to support their sustainability goals.
Peter Domeney, COO at Global Switch, echoed this sentiment by highlighting the significance of the agreement in their journey towards procuring 100% renewable energy by 2030. He emphasized the synergy between the forests of Wales and the cutting-edge technology deployed at Global Switch’s data centre, setting new standards for sustainable and environmentally-conscious operations.
