Google AI model understands dolphin chatter

Google recently introduced an AI model named DolphinGemma, designed to decode the intricate communication of dolphins with the ultimate goal of enabling interspecies communication in the future.

The unique vocalizations of dolphins, including clicks, whistles, and pulses, have long captivated scientists, who have sought to understand the patterns within these complex sounds.

Collaborating with engineers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and drawing on the research conducted by the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), Google unveiled DolphinGemma as a tool to aid in the comprehension of dolphin communication.

DolphinGemma, introduced around National Dolphin Day, represents a significant step forward in the study of cetacean communication. Trained specifically to analyze dolphin sounds, the AI model can even generate new, dolphin-like audio sequences.

For over three decades, the Wild Dolphin Project has conducted extensive underwater research to gain insights into context-specific sounds made by dolphins, such as signature “whistles,” burst-pulse “squawks,” and click “buzzes.” These sounds play essential roles in various dolphin interactions and behaviors.

The primary objective of the Wild Dolphin Project is to uncover the underlying structure and potential meanings within these natural sound sequences, with the hope of identifying grammatical rules that could indicate a form of language.

The comprehensive data collected by the Wild Dolphin Project over the years has been instrumental in training advanced AI models like DolphinGemma, enabling them to identify patterns and structures within dolphin communication.

DolphinGemma, developed by Google, utilizes specialized audio technologies to analyze dolphin sounds efficiently. By processing complex sequences of sounds, DolphinGemma can predict future sounds in a sequence, similar to how human language models predict the next word.

The AI model, with approximately 400 million parameters, is optimized to run efficiently on Google Pixel smartphones, which are used by the Wild Dolphin Project for data collection in the field.

By automating the identification of patterns and sequences in dolphin communication, DolphinGemma is expected to accelerate research efforts and help researchers uncover hidden structures and meanings within these natural sounds.

In addition to DolphinGemma, the Wild Dolphin Project, in collaboration with Georgia Tech, is developing the CHAT (Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry) system to establish a shared vocabulary with dolphins. The system aims to create associations between specific synthetic whistles and objects that dolphins enjoy interacting with, fostering a two-way interaction process.

The use of Google Pixel smartphones is essential for both the analysis of natural sounds and the CHAT system. These smartphones enable real-time processing of high-fidelity audio data in challenging ocean environments, enhancing the efficiency of research efforts.

Google plans to release DolphinGemma as an open model to researchers worldwide, allowing them to analyze their acoustic datasets and contribute to the collective understanding of dolphin communication. This collaborative approach aims to bridge the communication gap between humans and dolphins and advance our knowledge of these intelligent marine mammals.
