Grid technology firm CTC Global has introduced GridVista, an advanced observability platform aimed at providing utilities with real-time, high-resolution data to optimize grid capacity, prevent outages, and decrease operating costs.
In conjunction with the launch of GridVista, CTC has strengthened its collaborations with Google Cloud and Tapestry, a project under Alphabet, to establish the first unified grid model. By integrating GridVista’s features with Google Cloud and Tapestry’s AI-driven tools, the companies aim to convert line data into actionable insights.
CTC’s CEO, J.D. Sitton, emphasized the transformative impact of real-time visibility on transmission lines for utilities striving to enhance performance, mitigate operational risks, and cut down costs. This innovative technology directly addresses crucial challenges faced by utility providers.
The GridVista System revolutionizes transmission line intelligence by utilizing optical fibers embedded within the company’s ACCC Conductor. Rather than relying on external sensors for estimating line conditions, GridVista offers direct insights into strain, temperature, and vibration along the line, enhancing operational efficiency.
Using Google Cloud’s AI-driven Insights
The GridVista System operates on Google Cloud’s infrastructure, leveraging a range of advanced Google Cloud technologies like Vertex AI, BigQuery data warehousing, Earth Engine, Google Maps imagery analytics, and WeatherNext environmental forecasting. This collaboration enables operators to identify hidden capacity and optimize assets effectively.
Raiford Smith, Google Cloud’s global director of power and energy, highlighted the significance of leveraging AI to dynamically assess line conditions, enabling utilities to expedite power delivery without extensive delays and high capital investments. The partnership aims to enhance grid efficiency and reliability through data-driven insights.
Using Tapestry’s Grid Model
Tapestry will integrate GridVista data into its virtualized grid model, combining AI-enabled tools to enable grid operators and project developers to simulate line conditions effectively. This strategic integration enhances planning capabilities and facilitates meeting the growing demand for power.
With the US grid facing unprecedented strain due to aging infrastructure and increasing power demands, the collaboration between CTC, Google Cloud, and Tapestry is poised to address these challenges. The GridVista system offers a novel approach to monitoring grid dynamics, enhancing resilience and reliability in power distribution.
