HGP’s Unique Plan for Nuclear Reactor Data Centers
HGP has proposed an innovative plan that involves a revenue share with the government and the creation of a decommissioning fund, as reported by Bloomberg. This plan aims to repurpose retired nuclear reactors for data center use.
The Decommissioning Process and Storage Solution
Instead of the traditional method of shipping retired reactors to a remote storage facility in Washington state, HGP’s plan involves repurposing the reactors for a data center on land. This alternative approach not only accelerates the decommissioning process but also eliminates the need for long-term storage solutions for nuclear waste.
Challenges and Potential Benefits
Despite the promising concept, Kristen Vosmaer, managing director of JLL Work Dynamics Data Center team, highlights significant obstacles. Naval reactors use weapons-grade uranium that civilian entities cannot legally possess, and regulatory challenges make it difficult to repurpose military-designed systems for civilian use. However, Vosmaer acknowledges the potential benefits of ocean cooling and positioning flexibility offered by maritime data centers.
While the conversion of USS Nimitz’s nuclear reactors into data centers may face hurdles, the maritime concept presents unique opportunities for sustainable and efficient data center operations.
