atNorth Expands Presence in Finland with New Data Center Site
atNorth, a leading data center provider, has announced its plans for further expansion into Finland with the development of a new mega site in Kouvola. The site, known as FIN04, will be situated on a 21-hectare plot located 139KM northeast of Helsinki and 52KM from Hamina. This strategic move aligns with atNorth’s growth strategy and marks the company’s tenth data center in the Nordics and its fourth campus in Finland.
The FIN04 site will offer an immediate power supply of 60 megawatts (MW) in its first phase, which is set to be operational by the second half of 2025. The site has the potential to scale up to several hundred megawatts when fully developed, catering to both colocation customers and build-to-suit projects.
CEO of atNorth, Eyjolfur Magnus Kristinsson, expressed his enthusiasm for the new site, stating, “Kouvola is a crucial location for our next data center as we strive to meet the increasing demand for high-performance services. We are in discussions with various AI companies, hyperscalers, and international organizations looking to decarbonize their IT workloads by moving to the Nordics. Our vision is to lead the way in future-proofed data center infrastructure across the region.”
The Kouvola region is renowned for its commitment to sustainability, promoting a circular economy in its infrastructure design and architecture to benefit local communities, businesses, and residents.
Mayor of Kouvola, Marita Toikka, welcomed atNorth’s investment in the city, stating, “Kouvola is a sustainable destination that values responsible business practices. We are excited to partner with atNorth to drive innovation, digital competitiveness, and sustainability in the region.”
Collaborating with the city of Kouvola and energy partner, KSS Energia, the FIN04 site will be equipped with heat reuse capabilities, allowing excess heat from the data center to be recycled for potential reuse within the local community.
CEO of KSS Energia, Marko Riipinen, expressed his excitement for the partnership, stating, “We look forward to implementing a heat reuse practice with atNorth that can serve as a model for other businesses striving to meet sustainability goals and contribute to a greener world.”
The announcement of the FIN04 site follows atNorth’s recent acquisitions and developments in Finland, including the acquisition of two data center sites and the construction of a third facility. Additionally, the company is planning to launch a 30MW data center in Denmark by the end of 2024. This year, atNorth also acquired Gompute, expanding its HPC-as-a-Service offering and adding a new facility in Sweden to its portfolio.
