Summary:

  1. Mitsui OSK Lines and Kinetics are collaborating to develop the world’s first integrated floating data center platform.
  2. The facility will be powered by multiple energy sources, including offshore wind and solar power.
  3. The project aims to provide a scalable, mobile, and rapidly deployable alternative to traditional land-based data centers.

Japanese shipping giant Mitsui OSK Lines has joined forces with Kinetics, a renewable energy company, to create what they claim to be the first-ever integrated floating data center platform. This innovative project involves the design, construction, and deployment of a cutting-edge data center hosted on a refurbished vessel. The facility will be powered by a variety of energy sources, with the option to incorporate land-based grids, onshore solar farms, offshore wind, and other power generation solutions to ensure uninterrupted and dedicated power supply.

The collaboration between Mitsui OSK Lines and Kinetics aims to address the increasing global demand for digital infrastructure by offering a scalable, mobile, and rapidly deployable alternative to traditional land-based data centers. This new approach is expected to overcome challenges related to power constraints, land scarcity, and permitting delays. Kinetics’ parent company, Karpowership, brings a wealth of experience in integrated floating power solutions, boasting over two decades of operational expertise and more than 10,000 MW of installed capacity across 19 countries.

Mehmet Katmer, CEO of Kinetics, highlighted the significance of combining mobile power generation with floating data infrastructure to tackle critical market bottlenecks and facilitate faster, cleaner, and more flexible digital capacity expansion. The first Floating Data Center project is scheduled for deployment in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of data center technology. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, this collaboration between Mitsui OSK Lines and Kinetics is set to revolutionize the data center industry and pave the way for future advancements in digital infrastructure.
