Enhancing Connectivity for the 151st Kentucky Derby with Lumen Technologies
Churchill Downs Racetrack has teamed up with Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) to introduce Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) capabilities for the upcoming 151st Kentucky Derby. This partnership aims to enhance connectivity for the vast number of spectators, media outlets, and mutuel operations during Derby Week.
“In the world of one of the largest sports events, speed is crucial both on and off the track,” stated Mike Wood, Senior IT Director. “Utilizing Network-as-a-Service technology allows us to swiftly establish high-capacity, secure connections to facilitate guest Wi-Fi, vendor support, and media coverage. This behind-the-scenes innovation ensures the seamless functioning of Derby Week, providing spectators worldwide with unforgettable experiences.”
The digital demands of Derby Week have grown significantly, with daily data usage surging from 2-3 Gbps to approximately 200 Gbps due to the influx of over 385,000 attendees at Churchill Downs annually. Reliable network connections with low latency are essential for activities such as streaming, multi-channel operations, high-definition live broadcasts, mobile transactions, and Wi-Fi access, particularly during time-sensitive moments.
Gaining Cutting-Edge Network Capabilities
“Churchill Downs operates in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment, making it an iconic venue,” remarked Dave Ward, Chief Technology and Product Officer of Lumen. “By adopting a dynamic Network-as-a-Service platform, they are embracing a self-service, cloud-like network experience that can adapt to the speed of the Derby. We are proud to play a role in ushering in the future of connectivity at the racetrack.”
Churchill Downs requires year-round high-performance connectivity for its 83 annual race days. With Lumen NaaS, the team can dynamically adjust bandwidth levels to meet operational needs, ensuring continuous connectivity for critical functions like security systems, mutuel platforms, and veterinary services.
In addition to serving the track and grandstands, Lumen’s network extends to the backside village, catering to numerous equestrians and their families who rely on communication, education, and Internet services.
