Improvisational comedy, often known as improv, has struggled to gain recognition in the world of cinema for quite some time. While many may be familiar with short form improv from shows like Whose Line is it Anyway?, the art form has not always translated well to the big screen. However, Amazon Prime Video’s latest offering, Deep Cover, aims to change that narrative.
As a former improv troupe leader, I was excited to see a film that delves into the world of improv in a unique way. Deep Cover follows three aspiring improv comedians, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed, who are recruited by a renegade detective, portrayed by Sean Bean, to infiltrate a drug gang in London.
The film explores how the principles of improv, such as embracing the unknown and trusting your fellow actors, can be applied in high-stakes and dangerous situations. As the three characters dive deeper into their undercover mission, their improv skills are put to the test, leading to unexpected and humorous outcomes.
Deep Cover also touches on the importance of teamwork and listening in improv, as highlighted by Bryce Dallas Howard during a Q&A session after the film’s premiere. The idea of being present, listening, and playing without an agenda is a key theme that resonates throughout the movie.
The film cleverly showcases how the characters’ improv skills help them navigate through perilous situations, from improvising their way through a drug deal to bluffing their way into dangerous circles. The trust and camaraderie between the characters ultimately lead them to confront some of the most dangerous criminals in the UK, showcasing the power of teamwork and improvisation.
While Deep Cover may require some suspension of disbelief, much like improv itself, the film captures the essence of the art form and the thrill of spontaneous creativity. Just as in improv, where scenes can take on a life of their own and evolve into unexpected directions, Deep Cover keeps audiences entertained and on the edge of their seats with its unpredictable twists and turns.
Overall, Deep Cover is a refreshing take on the world of improv, blending comedy with action and suspense in a way that celebrates the art form and its principles. As someone who has experienced the magic of improv firsthand, I highly recommend checking out this unique and entertaining film that showcases the power of improvisation in unexpected ways.
While that does feel like a missed opportunity in a film all about improv, the love letter to the art is never lost. As mentioned at the start of this piece, it’s very hard to cover improv on the screen outside of short games. But finally, here’s a film with Hollywood A-Listers paying tribute to an incredible art form.
As an improviser, it’s something I never thought I’d see… and I’m so glad it exists.
Deep Cover drops on Amazon Prime Video tomorrow. You can sign up for a 30-day free trial here.
