Microsoft has raised concerns about the UK’s antitrust regulator’s approach to artificial intelligence in the technology industry. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) conducted an investigation into the £9bn UK cloud computing market and accused Microsoft of using its software dominance to stifle competition from Amazon Web Services and Google.
Despite the significant investments made by tech giants in AI infrastructure, the CMA stated that it did not see a direct impact of AI on competition in the traditional cloud market. In response, Microsoft criticized the CMA for overlooking the importance of AI in the corporate sector and warned that intervening based on these misunderstandings could harm the market.
Big tech companies like Microsoft are investing heavily in accelerated computing systems to develop advanced AI models. The CMA’s decision has come under scrutiny, leading to the replacement of its chair with the former head of Amazon UK.
Microsoft argued that the CMA’s view on the cloud computing market did not align with the actual industry operations, citing limited customer concerns about competition. The regulator is also considering granting Amazon and Microsoft strategic market status under the new digital markets regime, potentially impacting competition in the cloud industry.
Microsoft expressed concerns that interventions could inadvertently favor Google’s growth in the UK market, despite its third-place position in the cloud computing industry. Azure and Amazon Web Services dominate the global market, with Google Cloud trailing behind.
In response, the CMA stated that it is still analyzing feedback from various stakeholders, including Microsoft, before making a final decision on the impact of AI on competition in the cloud services market.
The investigation into the UK’s cloud services market began with Ofcom’s market study, which highlighted concerns about lack of competition affecting customers’ ability to switch providers and access multiple cloud services, potentially impacting pricing and quality.
