Microsoft to Invest $30 Billion in UK’s AI Infrastructure
Microsoft recently announced its plans to invest a whopping $30 billion in the UK between 2025 and 2028 to support its AI operations and expand its infrastructure in the country. This significant investment follows similar moves by tech giants like Google and BlackRock, all coinciding with President Trump’s visit to the UK.
Massive Investment in AI Infrastructure
Part of Microsoft’s investment will go towards capital expenditures, including the construction of the UK’s largest supercomputer at its AI Campus in Loughton. This supercomputer, built in partnership with NScale, will deliver 50MW of AI capacity, scalable to 90MW, and will house 23,040 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs by Q1 of 2027.
Supporting UK Operations and Growth
The remaining $15 billion will be used to fund ongoing operations in the UK, supporting a workforce of 6,000 employees across various functions such as research, AI model development, data center operations, and more. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, believes that this investment in AI has the potential to drive significant growth in the UK economy within the next decade.
Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, credited the UK government’s policy shifts for enabling such a substantial investment. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also praised Microsoft’s commitment, highlighting its importance in strengthening the UK’s digital infrastructure and supporting innovation in the country.
