OpenAI, in collaboration with South Korean tech giants Samsung and SK, has unveiled groundbreaking partnerships to supply chips and other technologies for the Stargate project. This ambitious $500 billion initiative aims to revolutionize AI infrastructure and drive innovation in the field.

OpenAI, Samsung, and SK have joined forces to support the Stargate project, a monumental endeavor that seeks to enhance AI capabilities through cutting-edge technologies. The strategic alliances were formalized following a meeting between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, and key industry leaders in Seoul. President Lee commended the partnerships as a pivotal opportunity for South Korea’s semiconductor sector to strengthen its position in AI and bolster employment opportunities.

Under the agreements, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, renowned for their memory chip manufacturing prowess, are poised to ramp up the production of advanced chips to meet the escalating memory requirements of the Stargate initiative. Additionally, OpenAI has forged partnerships with SK Telecom to explore the establishment of an AI data center in South Korea, dubbed “Stargate Korea,” and with Samsung affiliates to collaborate on data center technologies and potentially expand local capacity.

One of the standout collaborations involves the development of floating data centers by OpenAI, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries. These innovative data centers offer a range of benefits, including addressing land scarcity, reducing cooling expenses, and curbing carbon emissions. The collective efforts aim to propel South Korea into a leadership position in the global AI landscape, leveraging the nation’s exceptional tech talent, robust infrastructure, government backing, and thriving AI ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong emphasized the critical juncture faced by the industry with the advent of AI, underscoring the imperative for collaboration to shape the future effectively. Stargate, a collaborative venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, envisions a substantial expansion of computing infrastructure to facilitate the advancement and delivery of AI products. The consortium is committed to investing up to $500 billion to establish extensive data centers and secure energy sources crucial for advancing AI development.

OpenAI recently announced plans to expand its flagship AI data center in Texas, with the addition of five new facilities across the United States. These include two more data center complexes in Texas, along with installations in New Mexico, Ohio, and an undisclosed Midwest location. The strategic expansion underscores the escalating demand for AI infrastructure and signifies a significant step towards realizing the ambitious goals of the Stargate project.
