OpenAI has announced a $400 billion investment to establish five new data center sites in the US in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank Group. This initiative is part of their larger goal to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure within the country. The new locations will have a total capacity of 7 GW and are set to significantly enhance OpenAI’s services, including ChatGPT, used by millions weekly.

OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Group are teaming up to develop five new US data center sites with a total investment of $400 billion. This partnership is a major step towards fulfilling OpenAI’s commitment to spend $500 billion on AI infrastructure in the country. The new facilities, located in Texas, New Mexico, and Ohio, will have a combined power capacity of 7 GW, equivalent to that of some cities. The announcement was made during a press conference in Abilene, Texas, where the first data center under the Stargate initiative is being developed by OpenAI and Oracle.

This expansion brings the companies closer to their target of $500 billion investment in domestic data centers and AI infrastructure over the next four years. The additional computing capacity provided by these new sites will support OpenAI’s services, including the widely used ChatGPT, which serves 700 million users weekly.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized the importance of infrastructure in driving technological advancements during the press conference. The collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank aims to accelerate the development of AI capabilities and services through these new data center sites.
