Challenges Posed by Remote Location
Located 1,800km west of mainland Africa, the isolated island presented significant challenges due to its volcanic terrain and lack of infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, the geographical position of the island provided ideal conditions for satellite connectivity, necessitating the construction of a robust data center to withstand the harsh coastal environment. The project demanded meticulous risk management and compliance with safety standards to ensure optimal performance.
Logistical Intricacies and Community Collaboration
The project’s success hinged on intricate logistics spanning continents and cooperation with the local community. With limited sea freight opportunities and only one weekly flight to the island, precise timing was crucial. SITE engaged with residents, transforming the project into a community effort and aiming to stimulate the island’s economy.
Custom-Designed Modular Facility
To address the island’s unique conditions, a modular data center was engineered over 12 months in the UK. The facility, comprising multiple containers, features a primary data room, UPS and switch room, and lobby constructed from materials resistant to high salinity and ocean spray. High-density IT racks, energy-efficient cooling, and advanced security systems ensure a secure operational environment.
Success Through Modular Approach
Chris Wellfair, Projects Director at SITE, emphasized the project’s triumph, attributing its success to the modular approach and collaboration with the client. Overcoming logistical complexities and environmental challenges, the project achieved its objectives, showcasing the effectiveness of innovative solutions in data center construction.
