The announcement from the CPSC advises consumers to immediately discard hazardous batteries that have the potential to ignite and explode, presenting a fire hazard, especially when exposed to water and debris. Rad, based in Seattle, has not agreed to a recall for the batteries, which are produced in China.
The batteries were distributed as replacements and with various Rad bike models through Rad’s website, Best Buy stores, and independent bike shops. The battery model number (HL-RP-S1304 or RP-1304) can be found on a label on the back or rear of the battery, with the affected bike models including RadWagon 4, RadCity HS 4, RadRover High Step 5, RadCity Step Thru 3, RadRover Step Thru 1, RadRunner 2, RadRunner 1, RadRunner Plus, and RadExpand 5.
This development adds to the challenges faced by Rad, which recently disclosed financial struggles and the possibility of shutting down by early January. Rad contested the CPSC’s findings, asserting that their batteries meet the highest industry standards and are not defective or unsafe, despite the CPSC’s claims.
The company offered solutions to address the CPSC’s concerns regarding reported incidents of fires linked to Rad batteries, emphasizing that the incident rate is minimal. Rad emphasized the importance of proper handling and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries to mitigate fire risks, highlighting their commitment to safety and innovation in the industry.
