A new report from the UK Government’s Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce highlights that nuclear power may not be the solution to the power challenges faced by data centres in the UK without significant reform.
The report emphasizes that the UK has become the most expensive country in the world for nuclear projects and calls for a ‘radical reset’ of regulations to meet the increasing demand for electricity from AI, data centres, and broader electrification efforts.
Led by John Fingleton, the taskforce outlines 47 recommendations aimed at reshaping nuclear oversight, including simplifying regulatory processes, reducing risk aversion, and working closely with industry to expedite project delivery and foster innovation.
As countries like the US and France move to streamline nuclear capacity expansion, the UK must also address the critical timing issues it faces with the rapid growth of data centre power consumption. The report underscores the urgent need for a transformational reset in the nuclear sector to meet energy demands, reduce carbon emissions, and sustain economic growth.
