Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have unveiled groundbreaking energy-efficient NPU technology that showcases significant performance enhancements in lab tests. Their specialized AI chip outperformed traditional graphics cards by running AI models 60% faster while consuming 44% less electricity, as demonstrated in controlled experiments.

In a remarkable breakthrough, a team of researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has introduced cutting-edge energy-efficient NPU technology that delivers remarkable performance improvements in laboratory settings. The specially designed AI chip exhibited a 60% increase in speed in running AI models while consuming 44% less electricity compared to the graphics cards commonly used in AI systems today. This research, spearheaded by Professor Jongse Park from KAIST’s School of Computing in partnership with HyperAccel Inc., tackles a critical issue in modern AI infrastructure: the immense energy and hardware demands of large-scale generative AI models. Current systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 necessitate not only high memory bandwidth but also substantial memory capacity, prompting tech giants such as Microsoft and Google to invest in hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs.
