Supporting academics and start-ups in the UK cyber sector
As part of the new initiatives, a total of £16m will be invested in two key cyber programs to drive growth in the sector. The CyberASAP program will receive up to £10m over the next four years to assist UK cyber academics in transforming their research into viable commercial ventures. Additionally, £6m will be allocated to enhance support for UK cyber startups and SMEs through the Cyber Runway accelerator program. By nurturing researchers and entrepreneurs, these initiatives aim to solidify the UK’s position as a global leader in cyber innovation, creating more employment opportunities and fostering innovation within the industry.
The importance of resilience in a digital world
The forthcoming Cyber Growth Action Plan, set to be released later this summer, will play a crucial role in shaping the UK’s National Cyber Strategy. It will analyze the supply and demand dynamics of cyber goods and services, including protective monitoring and encryption, to identify emerging trends and potential growth areas within the UK cyber industry. Furthermore, the plan will explore advancements in technologies such as AI and quantum, seeking to bolster the UK’s competitive edge in the digital economy. Professor Simon Shiu from the University of Bristol highlighted the necessity of enhancing cyber resilience across various sectors critical to UK security and prosperity.
Industry experts informing government policy
The government is tapping into the expertise of senior cybersecurity professionals from leading tech companies, AI labs, and academia to shape its cyber policies. The newly formed Government Cyber Advisory Board, comprising experts from BAE Systems, Santander, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google DeepMind, will play a pivotal role in advising on strategies to enhance the public sector’s cyber resilience. This collaborative effort aligns with the government’s Cyber Security Strategy and reinforces the delivery of secure digital services across governmental agencies. As cybersecurity takes center stage in securing the economy and driving national growth, the government’s focus on cyber resilience underscores its commitment to a secure and innovative digital landscape.
