In a recent survey of 73 data centre sites, it has been revealed that the sector is becoming more water-conscious as it prepares for the growth driven by artificial intelligence (AI). The majority of facilities now use less than 10,000 m³ of water per year, with 51% utilizing waterless cooling methods.
The report from techUK, in collaboration with the Environment Agency, highlights that 64% of surveyed data centres consume under 10,000 m³ of water annually, showcasing a significant reduction in water usage. This challenges the misconception that data centres are inherently water-intensive, with many operators adopting more efficient practices to minimize environmental impact.
As the data centre industry continues to expand with the advancement of AI technology, it is crucial for operators to prioritize sustainability and reduce water consumption. The UK Government aims for a 20-fold increase in compute capacity by 2030, emphasizing the need for the sector to align with evolving standards and minimize water use to protect the environment for future generations.
