Samsung made waves with the debut of its first folding phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. Fast forward to today, and the tech giant has introduced the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, a revolutionary device that pushes the boundaries of smartphone design. I had the opportunity to test out this cutting-edge phone at CES 2026, and here are my initial impressions.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is a remarkable device that defies expectations with its lightweight design. Weighing in at 309g, it strikes a balance between portability and durability, making it easy to handle without feeling flimsy. When unfolded, it boasts a sleek profile, measuring just 3.9mm at its thinnest point, setting a new standard for slimness in the world of smartphones and tablets. Despite its larger size when unfolded, the Galaxy Z TriFold remains manageable for one-handed use, providing a comfortable experience for reading or watching content.

One unique feature of the Galaxy Z TriFold is its tri-folding mechanism, allowing it to transform from a standard smartphone size to a spacious 10-inch tablet. While the folding process may feel unconventional, with the left panel folding in first before the right panel, it offers a seamless transition between modes. However, the lack of flexibility in viewing angles is a minor drawback compared to other folding phones in the market.

The device boasts impressive displays, with a vibrant 6.5-inch external AMOLED screen that delivers sharp detail and vivid colors. When unfolded, the internal 10-inch AMOLED display provides an immersive viewing experience for a wide range of content. Despite the presence of creases where the phone folds, they are not distracting during use, ensuring a smooth visual experience.

In terms of performance, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, delivering snappy performance for multitasking and app usage. While it may not feature the latest chipset, the device handles tasks smoothly without any noticeable lag. The inclusion of a high-quality camera setup further enhances the user experience, allowing for stunning photos and videos.

The software experience on the Galaxy Z TriFold is intuitive, running on Android with Samsung’s One UI 8 overlay. The device offers unique multitasking features, enabling users to run multiple apps simultaneously and take advantage of the expansive internal display. Additionally, the inclusion of Samsung DeX support provides a desktop-like experience for increased productivity.

Despite its impressive features, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is currently only available in South Korea, with plans for a US launch in the first quarter of 2026. The device may face challenges such as fingerprint smudges and the lack of S Pen stylus support, but its innovative design and advanced features make it a standout choice for users seeking a cutting-edge smartphone experience.

In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold represents the future of smartphones, blending innovative design with advanced technology. While it may have some limitations, its unique features and exceptional performance set it apart from traditional smartphones. As the device expands its availability worldwide, it promises to redefine the way we interact with mobile technology.
