SpaceX has made another significant investment in expanding its wireless spectrum licenses, acquiring $2.6 billion worth from EchoStar. This move follows a $17 billion deal announced in September and comes as SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service continues to attract new customers worldwide.
The spectrum purchase coincides with SpaceX reaching a milestone of 8 million global customers. In a further development, International Airlines Group has committed to installing Starlink inflight internet on over 500 aircraft within its network, which includes major carriers like British Airways and Iberia.
The additional spectrum from EchoStar will enhance Starlink’s “direct to cell” constellation, enabling T-Mobile users to access satellite-based 5G internet services. EchoStar’s decision to sell off its spectrum licenses was influenced by regulatory pressures, including direct intervention from the Trump administration, as reported by Bloomberg.
While SpaceX’s acquisition effectively halted EchoStar’s own satellite constellation plans, AT&T also secured a significant portion of EchoStar’s spectrum in a separate deal. The collaboration with International Airlines Group will see Starlink integrated into various types of aircraft starting in 2026, covering a wide range of flight routes.
Starlink’s presence in the aviation industry has been steadily growing, with partnerships expanding to include major airlines like United and Qatar Airways. SpaceX’s efforts have led to a substantial increase in Starlink customers, surpassing 8 million across 150 countries and demonstrating significant growth in a short period.
