STT GDC has established a cutting-edge data centre, STT Tokyo 1, in Inzai City, Greater Tokyo, as part of its global expansion strategy. This facility, strategically located in Northeast Asia, represents a significant milestone for the company. It boasts a gross floor area of 60,000 square metres and can support up to 70 megawatts of IT capacity across two buildings within Goodman Business Park. When fully operational, STT Tokyo 1 will offer up to 32 megawatts of power to meet the growing demand for secure and energy-efficient digital infrastructure in Japan.

Located in Inzai City in the Greater Tokyo area, this strategically positioned facility strengthens STT GDC’s presence in Northeast Asia and marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.

STT Tokyo 1 is the first of two buildings in our data centre campus located within Goodman Business Park. With a gross floor area of 60,000 square metres, both will support up to 70 megawatts of IT capacity in total, with STT Tokyo 1 providing up to 32 megawatts when fully operational.

“STT Tokyo 1 reflects the best of STT GDC’s global expertise that we are bringing to Japan – operational excellence, future-ready infrastructure, and sustainability embedded by design,” said Kiyoshi Maeda, Chief Executive Officer – Japan, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres. “As Japan’s digital transformation accelerates, this facility will offer customers the performance and reliability they need to unlock the full potential of their applications and data. We are proud to play a role in elevating the country’s digital ambitions to greater heights.”

Designed with both performance and sustainability as foundational principles, STT Tokyo 1 adheres to Japan Data Centre Council (JDCC) guidelines—a critical requirement for local customers. The facility addresses the growing demand for secure, resilient, and energy-efficient digital infrastructure from global cloud service providers, financial services institutions, content platforms and other Japanese enterprises.

STT Tokyo 1 is committed to delivering carbon-neutral operations from day one for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. To achieve this, the facility has integrated energy-efficient design resulting in world-class PUE, and embarked upon a considered renewable energy purchase program in line with STT GDC’s global sustainability commitments.

STT Tokyo 1 features behind-the-meter solar photovoltaic system that powers essential operations including external façade lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, and water pumps.

STT Tokyo 1 is built to meet stringent international standards, having been among the first data centres globally to achieve the TIA-942-C Design Certification in mid-2024. This credential ensures robust redundancy, high availability, and strong physical security, meeting the rigorous demands of hyperscalers and enterprise clients alike.

Built with enterprise-grade reliability in mind, STT Tokyo 1 also operates on a 66kV dual-feed utility intake with on-site substation that delivers maximum uptime, with the ability to seamlessly switch between redundant power feeds. This automatically maintains service continuity for customers with mission-critical workloads.

The launch of STT Tokyo 1 addresses Japan’s rapidly expanding data centre market, which is projected by research firm IDC Japan to grow from 2.74 trillion yen in 2023 to 5.08 trillion yen (US$34.6 billion) by 2028. The Japan data centre market growth is fuelled by growing reliance on cloud computing services, increasing requirements for AI technologies, the trend of outsourcing IT services, and the movement toward data onshoring; precisely the demands that STT Tokyo 1 is designed to meet. In addition, Japan will also see the addition of eight more submarine cables to its existing 40 operational submarine cables, which are expected to become operational by 2025-2027[1]. These submarine cables enable high-speed data transmission, decrease latency, as well as meet the increasing demand for broadband and cloud services, which are essential for Japan’s digital economy.
