SpaceX Establishes Starbase City in Texas
Elon Musk’s SpaceX has made a significant move by establishing its own official company town in southern Texas. Residents near the Starbase launch site voted overwhelmingly to incorporate as a city, which will now be known as Starbase. The Cameron County Elections Department reported that 212 votes were in favor of the incorporation, with only six against.
Elon Musk took to social media to announce the news, stating that Starbase, Texas is now officially a city. The majority of the new city’s residents are believed to be SpaceX employees. In addition to incorporating, the residents also elected three current and former Starbase employees, Bobby Peden, Jordan Buss, and Jenna Petrzelka, who ran unopposed for positions as mayor and commissioners.
SpaceX has not disclosed specific reasons for incorporating the area, but the company currently manages the area’s infrastructure and services such as roads, utilities, schooling, and medical care. The shift to city governance will also allow SpaceX to have authority over the nearby Boca Chica beach and state park for launch activities.
Elon Musk previously announced the relocation of SpaceX’s headquarters from California to the Starbase facility in Texas. He cited safety concerns and disagreements with California state laws as reasons for the move. Following the recent election, a new social media account representing the town expressed excitement about the future of Starbase as a city dedicated to advancing humanity’s presence in space.
