Sound Transit revealed that the long-awaited “Crosslake Connection” of the Link light rail system is scheduled to open to the public on March 28. This new route will mark a significant milestone in the region’s transportation network, providing a crucial link between Seattle and the Eastside, particularly for tech workers commuting to major tech hubs.
The extension of the 2 Line will allow light rail passengers to traverse a floating bridge for the first time, offering a seamless connection between downtown Seattle, downtown Bellevue, and the Redmond Technology station at Microsoft’s headquarters. This extension is part of Sound Transit’s efforts to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in the region.
Testing of trains on the bridge, which connects new stations at Mercer Island and Judkins Park, began in September. The completion of the East Link segment of the 2 Line last April marked a significant step towards the realization of the Seattle-Eastside line, which has been in the works for nearly 18 years.
The Seattle-Eastside line has been a long time in the making, with various challenges and delays along the way. However, the imminent opening of the “Crosslake Connection” signifies a major achievement in the region’s transportation infrastructure, offering a more efficient and sustainable mode of travel for commuters.
With the rapid growth of the tech industry in Seattle and the Eastside, the demand for reliable and convenient transportation options has never been higher. The addition of light rail service between the two regions will not only benefit tech workers but also contribute to the overall economic development and sustainability of the area.
