Following a thrilling journey through China, the competition on Race Across the World is intensifying, with one team facing elimination in the upcoming episode.

Warning: Spoilers for Race Across the World series 5 episode 2 ahead

As per the show’s format, the last team to reach the next checkpoint will be eliminated. Recent tumultuous weather conditions at the second checkpoint have added an extra layer of challenge for the contestants. The BBC has kept the identity of the eliminated team under wraps, leaving viewers in suspense until the next episode airs on Wednesday, 7 May. However, there are some clear indicators pointing towards which team might be bidding farewell to the competition.

Typhoon trouble

At the second checkpoint in Sanya, three teams successfully made it through. Sisters Elizabeth and Letitia maintained their lead, followed by brothers Brian and Melvyn, who moved up to second place. The young couple, Fin and Sioned, also reached the checkpoint. However, two teams were left behind – mother and son duo Caroline and Tom, and former couple Gaz and Yin. Unfortunately, Gaz and Yin find themselves in a more precarious situation compared to Caroline and Tom.

Caroline and Tom have arrived on the island of Hainan, ready to continue their journey once conditions improve. On the other hand, Gaz and Yin are stuck on the mainland, uncertain about when they can catch the ferry. Unless a significant turnaround occurs, it seems unlikely that Gaz and Yin will be able to catch up to the other teams, resulting in a significant gap between them and the leading contestants.

While the weather conditions have played a role in their predicament, it underscores the unpredictable nature of Race Across the World.

The trailers tell all

A perusal of the trailer from the end of episode 1 on BBC iPlayer offers some insights into the upcoming episodes. Clips from Nepal and India hint at the destinations of various teams, with one couple conspicuously absent from these locations – Gaz and Yin. The trailer showcases snippets of Brian and Melvyn in India, Caroline exploring Jaipur, and Elizabeth and Letitia on a bus tour in Nepal. Fin and Sioned are seen near the town of Bithoor in India.

A notable shot of Gaz and Yin running across a bridge, seemingly drenched, suggests that they may not progress beyond checkpoint three, barring any unexpected twists orchestrated by the editors.

Their backstory has already been told

While some contestants like Brian and Melvyn have yet to delve deeply into their personal motivations for joining the race, Gaz and Yin’s backstory was revealed in episode two. The pair shared their emotional journey, reflecting on their daughter’s perspective and the challenges of being away from her on her birthday. As a divorced couple, their amicable bond and shared experiences added a unique dynamic to their race.

Producers often strategically place emotional moments throughout the series, and the timing of Gaz and Yin’s backstory revelation could hint at their imminent departure from the competition.

Race Across the World series 5 continues next Wednesday at 9pm BST on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

One of the most important aspects of self-care is maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
