OpenAI and design icon Jony Ive are facing complex technical hurdles as they collaborate on a groundbreaking screen-less, AI-driven device, as reported by the Financial Times.
In a bold move back in May, OpenAI acquired io, a startup founded by the renowned Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, for a whopping $6.5 billion. Altman expressed his excitement about Ive and his team’s involvement in pioneering a fresh wave of AI-powered computers. Meanwhile, Bloomberg revealed that the initial devices born from this partnership are slated for a grand debut in 2026.
The latest update from the FT unveils the ambitious goal of OpenAI and Ive to craft a compact, screenless gadget capable of interpreting audio and visual cues from its surroundings and promptly responding to user commands. Nevertheless, unresolved issues loom over the device’s “personality,” privacy protocols, and computational framework, potentially causing delays in its launch.
For instance, insiders disclosed to the FT that instead of waiting for explicit verbal cues, the device would adopt an “always on” mode. However, the team is grappling with ensuring the device speaks up only when necessary and concludes conversations appropriately.
