Addressing Persistent Skills Gaps in Networking, Cybersecurity, and Data/AI: A New IDC InfoBrief
Businesses in the UK are facing ongoing challenges with skills shortages in critical areas such as networking, cybersecurity, and data/AI, hindering their growth potential. A recent IDC InfoBrief commissioned by Expereo highlights the impact of these gaps on organisations across the industry.
Key Findings from the IDC InfoBrief
The study reveals that cybersecurity, networking, and data/AI/automation are the most affected areas, with 44% reporting shortages in cybersecurity, 40% in networking, and 33% in data/AI/automation roles. These shortages have persisted from the challenges faced in 2024, leading to delays in AI adoption and necessitating changes in leadership priorities and workforce strategies.
Strategies to Address Skills Gaps
Organisations are adopting a combination of approaches to mitigate the impact of skills shortages. While 40% of businesses plan to rely more on external vendors to fill networking gaps, 38% are considering similar strategies for cybersecurity roles. Internal initiatives such as upskilling, cross-training, and developing human skills like collaboration and creativity are also being prioritised to address these challenges.
The Rise of AI in Business Leadership
The prominence of AI is reshaping executive relationships within organisations. Technology leaders are increasingly collaborating with CEOs to drive AI strategies, with 33% reporting closer ties between the CIO and CEO. Despite predictions of the emergence of Chief AI Officers (CAIO), only 13% of UK businesses have appointed individuals to this role, indicating a slower adoption than anticipated.
Ben Elms, CEO of Expereo, emphasises the importance of empowering technology leaders to navigate these challenges and drive innovation. By strengthening partnerships, rethinking leadership structures, and investing in talent development, businesses can position themselves to leverage AI effectively and achieve their growth objectives.
