Julie Wainwright: From Setback to Success

Julie Wainwright has achieved a remarkable feat by taking two companies public, but her new memoir, Time to Get Real, offers readers more than just a success story. In this candid account, Wainwright delves into the gritty realities of leadership, sharing insights that many high-achieving CEOs can relate to but seldom discuss openly. One of the defining moments in her career was the closure of Pets.com during the 2000 market crash, a setback that lingered for years.

If you lived through the dot-com era, you likely remember Pets.com with its iconic sock puppet mascot and catchy slogan, “Because pets can’t drive.” However, the company’s demise during the burst of the dot-com bubble cast a shadow over Wainwright’s professional life. Recruiters told her that no one would hire her again, marking a challenging period in her career.

Wainwright’s journey to success was not without obstacles. After gaining experience at Clorox, she navigated the male-dominated tech industry of the ’90s, eventually becoming the CEO of Berkeley Systems and Reel.com. Despite facing long hours and challenges, she managed to grow Reel.com’s revenue significantly before it was acquired by Hollywood Video. Wainwright thrived without a boss, showcasing her leadership skills and determination.

The turning point came in 2000 when Wainwright took Pets.com public, only to shut it down later that year amidst the dot-com bubble burst. This professional setback was compounded by personal turmoil as her husband asked for a divorce on the same day she announced the company’s closure. The media scrutiny that followed added to her distress, creating a difficult period in her life.

Despite the setbacks, Wainwright embarked on a remarkable second act. In 2010, she founded The RealReal, a pioneer in the luxury consignment market. Starting from her home, the company quickly outgrew its humble beginnings, processing a vast array of luxury items each month. The RealReal went public in 2019, marking another milestone in Wainwright’s career.

However, success was not without its challenges. In 2022, Wainwright was ousted from The RealReal by board members she had recommended, revealing the harsh realities of the corporate world. Undeterred, she continues her entrepreneurial journey with Ahara, a nutrition company focused on personalized dietary recommendations based on genetics and individual needs.

A Refreshing Perspective on Leadership

What sets Wainwright apart is her candid approach to sharing her experiences. In her memoir, she offers practical wisdom alongside personal revelations, giving readers a glimpse into the complexities of leadership. From bonus structures to leadership evaluations, Wainwright’s insights provide valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Wainwright’s memoir is not just a recounting of her journey; it’s a guide for founders seeking a realistic view of entrepreneurship. By sharing her mistakes and triumphs, she hopes to inspire others to navigate the challenges of building a successful business.
