A groundbreaking smart city pilot initiative was unveiled recently at the Maison de l’Innovation in Belval, Luxembourg.
Under the €3.1M EU-funded SmartSpires project, Luxembourg’s Belval Innovation campus is set to undergo a transformation into a smart city testing ground, integrating cutting-edge technologies like 5G, edge computing, and IoT to revolutionize urban services.
Led by a collaborative effort between public and private entities such as Gcore, 5SKYE, LIST, and Orange Luxembourg, with backing from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), SmartSpires aims to deploy smart towers equipped with 5G, edge computing, and IoT sensors to support real-time, AI-driven applications for urban management.
This innovative project will focus on key areas including mobility services, crowd analytics for public safety, waste management optimization, and a Smart City Living Lab for testing and scaling solutions. By prioritizing local data processing to reduce latency, optimize energy consumption, and enhance data governance, SmartSpires presents a scalable model for cities across Europe.
Elisabeth Margue, Luxembourg Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Media and Connectivity, expressed, “The launch of SmartSpires marks a significant milestone in Luxembourg’s digital evolution. By transforming Belval into a living laboratory for future smart cities through advanced 5G connectivity, edge computing, and AI integration, this initiative aims to enhance sustainability and improve the quality of life for residents while reshaping the urban landscape across Europe.”
The consortium’s expertise spans Gcore’s edge infrastructure, LIST’s research and development capabilities, 5SKYE’s smart infrastructure solutions, and Orange Luxembourg’s robust 5G network.
Summary: A cutting-edge smart city pilot project, SmartSpires, is set to revolutionize urban living in Luxembourg’s Belval Innovation campus by integrating advanced technologies like 5G, edge computing, and IoT to enhance urban services and sustainability.
