United has introduced the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID feature at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, joining nine other airports across the U.S. where this service is available for travelers. This cutting-edge technology allows passengers to move swiftly through security checkpoints without presenting a boarding pass or physical ID.
Initially launched at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport in December 2023, United’s Touchless ID service has expanded to Sea-Tac as part of the airline’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for its customers.
Alaska Airlines and Delta also provide the Touchless ID service at Sea-Tac, offering passengers a seamless and efficient security solution during their travels.
United customers can easily opt-in for Touchless ID through the United app when checking in for their flight. At the airport, travelers have their photo taken at a TSA security checkpoint, where facial recognition technology compares the real-time image with the customer’s license or passport photo on file with the government.
Facial recognition technology and the broader adoption of biometrics in air travel are becoming more prevalent at U.S. airports, with Sea-Tac introducing Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) units last October.
The use of facial recognition technology in airports is expanding, with experts suggesting that it may soon become a standard part of the airport journey, from bag drop to boarding and even shopping within airport retail stores.
TSA PreCheck membership is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents, with a $78 application fee that grants five years of status eligibility.
