Article:

The mobile OS battleground has shifted towards artificial intelligence in the latest phase of competition, as Huawei unveils HarmonyOS 6. This new release places a strong emphasis on AI agents, which are not just features but the very architecture that powers user interactions. By incorporating AI agents into the framework, HarmonyOS 6 is aiming to revolutionize the way operating systems function, turning them into intelligent intermediaries that can anticipate, learn, and act on behalf of users.

One of the key highlights of HarmonyOS 6 is the AI agents framework, which allows developers to create automated programs without the need to build or train complex foundation models from scratch. This framework aims to make AI development more accessible within Huawei’s ecosystem. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, has announced that HarmonyOS 6 will launch with more than 50 AI agents from established Chinese platforms like Weibo and Ximalaya. This integration of AI agents represents a significant shift in the industry, where operating systems are evolving into platforms for artificial intelligence deployment rather than just launching applications.

In addition to the AI agents, Huawei has introduced Pangu 5.5, the latest addition to its AI models designed for enterprise and industrial applications. With a natural language processing model containing 718 billion parameters and a computer vision model featuring 15 billion parameters, these models are positioned competitively in the current AI landscape. Huawei is targeting five specialized sectors – medicine, finance, governance, manufacturing, and automotive – with these AI models, showcasing a strategic focus on strengthening enterprise relationships while navigating geopolitical constraints in the consumer market.

As Huawei continues to expand the reach of HarmonyOS, the platform has shown steady progress with eight million registered developers and over 30,000 applications and atomic services. While HarmonyOS still trails behind iOS and Android in terms of global reach, Huawei’s emphasis on essential applications that drive user engagement reflects a mature strategy to compete with established platforms. The company’s multi-device strategy, including the recent launch of laptops with HarmonyOS, aims to create a unified software experience akin to Apple’s ecosystem approach, signaling Huawei’s transition from a hardware-focused company to a software and services provider.
