A Quick Overview

Expert’s Rating

Our Evaluation

The movie adaptation of Until Dawn brings a fresh perspective to the beloved horror game, showcasing its potential in the film industry. While the storyline deviates from the original game, it retains the essence that fans will appreciate.

Current Best Pricing

In 2015, I can vividly recall gathering with my friends to delve into the world of a new horror game named Until Dawn. That night turned into hours of gameplay, and since then, I have revisited it numerous times. The game holds a special spot in my heart, just like it does for many enthusiasts. So, how does the 2025 film adaptation from Sony Pictures measure up?

The answer is: It holds its own unique charm.

The storyline follows a group of teenagers (Ella Rubin, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Michael Cimino, and Odessa A’zion) embarking on a road trip in search of Clover’s (Rubin) missing sister, Mel (Maia Mitchell). While the setting differs from the snowy backdrop of the game, it exudes a distinct eeriness, especially in how the new location is depicted.

As showcased in the trailer, the only tangible link to the game is the gas station attendant, portrayed by Peter Stormare. While there is no explicit indication that he is reprising his role as Dr. Hill, the familiar voice reminiscent of the psychiatry sessions in the game adds a nostalgic touch.

Fear serves as a primary driving force in the film, compelling the group to confront their innermost fears and motivations. The narrative pushes them to learn from their mistakes and progress through the challenges. Unlike typical teen horror films, the characters demonstrate growth and adaptability, learning from each experience. While the absence of a literal “butterfly effect” notification is noted, the film skillfully conveys the repercussions of their actions.

The movie successfully immerses viewers in a video game-like world, enticing them to envision a game adaptation while watching. With multiple monsters, varied death scenarios, and new decision-making opportunities, the film captures the essence of interactive gameplay.

I even found myself wanting to play a game version of the film more than once

While the group dynamics are well-portrayed, the film falls short in delving deeper into the characters’ backgrounds and interpersonal conflicts. Unlike the game, the absence of flashbacks deprives the audience of crucial insights that would have enriched the storyline. Nonetheless, the ensemble cast delivers commendable performances, establishing their own identities separate from the original game characters.

The film is replete with Easter eggs, including a particularly surprising callback that evoked an audible reaction from me. These subtle references and tributes enhance the narrative, appealing to both fans of the game and horror genre enthusiasts.

The hourglass, a prominent feature on the game cover but absent from the original story, assumes a character-like presence in the film. Its recurring appearance symbolizes the characters’ mortality and the lingering consequences of their actions. This inventive incorporation aligns well with the game’s theme of diverging paths and multiple outcomes.

Rubin and Ciminio shoulder the narrative with their performances, navigating through twists and turns, albeit with occasional inconsistencies. A longer runtime could have provided more depth to the characters’ arcs and relationships, addressing the lack of crucial flashbacks. The final act felt rushed, leaving potential story elements unexplored that could have benefitted from additional screen time.

…this is one of the few films where I wish that they had given us a longer run time

Is the Until Dawn film adaptation worth watching?

Until Dawn carves its own niche in the horror genre while paying homage to its gaming roots. It offers a thrilling and gory experience, though it falls short in character development and pacing towards the end. Approaching the film as a standalone piece inspired by the original source material will ensure an enjoyable viewing experience, complete with spine-chilling moments.

This adaptation may introduce new audiences to the 2015 game, prompting them to explore the immersive world of a snowy mountainscape through gameplay. With any luck, the success of the film may pave the way for a potential sequel, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

Until Dawn is now showing in theaters. Tickets are available for purchase from Cineworld, Odeon, and Vue in the UK, and AMC Theatres, Fandango, and the Until Dawn website in the US.
