Qualcomm has recently unveiled its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, set to debut in the upcoming Xiaomi 17 series smartphones. The new flagship processor boasts enhanced performance, improved AI capabilities, and introduces the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, challenging the dominance of iPhone in video recording on Android devices.

The APV codec promises to deliver professional-grade video production and groundbreaking AI camera technology, enabling near-lossless video quality and allowing for detailed post-production adjustments for superior results.

While the Xiaomi 17 series will be the first devices to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, it appears that they may not include the APV codec. According to Judd Heape, VP of product management at Qualcomm, devices with APV onboard are expected to arrive in January 2026, coinciding with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S26 series.

Heape hinted that Samsung’s flagship smartphones could be the first Android devices to incorporate the APV codec, a Samsung-developed technology that has been highly anticipated in the industry. The delay in implementing APV in devices suggests that consumers may have to wait until next year to experience the full capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.

Overall, the introduction of the APV codec signifies a significant advancement in video recording technology for Android devices, potentially reshaping the landscape of mobile videography in the coming years.
